Put the World in Your Pocket with Google Maps

There are only a few minimal steps required to set up Google Maps and they're slightly different on each device.

For iOS users:

1. Tap the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap on the search icon on the bottom screen and enter “Google Maps.”

3. Tap the app in the results and then tap "Get."

4. Verify with Face and Touch ID or with your Apple ID password to initiate a download.

5. After installation, click "Open" and sign in with your Google account for a personalised experience.

For Android users:

1. Launch Google Play Store app from App Drawer.

2. Click the search bar and type in “Google Maps.”

3. Choose the official app and click on install.

4. Most devices with Android operating systems have Google Maps pre-installed, so check the application drawer, perhaps it will already be there.

5. Once installed, open the application and give the location permission to the app, for it to be able to locate you accurately.

Both versions of the app are free to download and use, but a stable internet connection is recommended when setting up the app because it requires Internet to download map data, as well as to synchronise account preferences. After installation, just switch on location and notifications – these are the most valuable features of the app, such as traffic and turn-by-turn navigation data.

Google Maps Turns Every Street into an Adventure

One of the major attractions of Google Maps is the ease with which one can turn exploring into a directed, not a guessing game. Once you open the app you will see a detailed map, centered on your location with restaurants, shops, parks, etc marked as interactive icons on the map.

Click in the search bar and type any address, business or point of interest around the world. You can view photos of the establishments on display, read reviews, get information on opening times as well as information about how much business a place receives at various times of the day. Useful for discovery when you're not in any particular mood, the "Explore" tab at the bottom of the screen will show with trending restaurants, top-rated attractions, and hidden gems visible depending on where you are in the world.

If you want something a little more intensive drop the little orange pedestrian icon from Google Street View on any road for a more immersive experience. This allows you to roam the streets in a virtual environment, see a Hotel entry before you even get there, or check out a neighbourhood before you arrive. Satellite view can provide a high-level overview, making it helpful for planning large parks, campuses, or when the terrain is unfamiliar.

It also has the ability to view maps without being connected to the Internet, which is useful to set up before travelling abroad. Download a specific area beforehand and search addresses and directions without needing any data connection – good in areas with network coverage issues, or when you don't want to be charged for roaming abroad.

Design Your Perfect Custom Adventure on Google Maps

While Google Maps is undeniably an excellent way to navigate the world, it's also a pretty capable trip-planning program if you know how to make use of it.

First, click on the 'Saved' tab to save favourite locations. These can be filtered into custom lists (e.g. "Tokyo Food Spots" or "Weekend Hiking Trails") making it very easy to lay out an imaginary itinerary before leaving home. Any saved location will remain “pinned” on your map, so you can see everything within your vicinity easily when you're “out and about”.

The app will let you insert multiple destinations in a single route for multi-stop trips. Once you've set your starting and end point, tap the three dot menu and choose adding stop to add other points and create a perfect road trip with more than one point for sightseeing. It is also possible to drag and reorder stops to fine-tune the path.

Connect with a place using the "Your Timeline" option under your profile icon, and have a secure memory of where you've been, whether that's to a fantastic café last month or to reconstruct a past trip. Alongside this, the curated lists of the "Explore" tab, like "Must-see attractions" or "Top-rated restaurants" guide a new user to the offerings of a specific destination without needing to do any research first.

The “Share location” will also allow your friends and family to locate your real-time position with you, making it easier to arrange outings in busy and unfamiliar locations. Together with saving maps and multi-stop routing, Google Maps emerges as a compact but surprisingly comprehensive trip planner.

Beat the Traffic Jam with Google Maps

Google Maps, however, is a critical tool in our everyday lives and real-time traffic awareness is its praiseworthy strength. Once you get onto your destination, the app instantly highlights the route you will travel with traffic colors: green means light traffic, orange means medium, red and dark red mean heavy traffic.

Google Maps displays a variety of paths below available under the route options, as well as travel times for each path, based upon current conditions, not just the physical distance. This lets you quickly see the difference between a quick highway trip vs. a slower but less-rushed route down a side street. These estimates update continuously, as the same conditions or omissions change, or you skip a turn, they update automatically.

There is also live reporting ability within the application for any sort of accident, road closures, speed traps, hazards on the road, etc. While you're driving, take a moment to click the "Contribute" or reporting icon when you notice that you're encountering a problem or just traveling down a familiar roadway. This community-spotted information is one reason why Google Maps' traffic predictions are always fairly accurate, rather than just based on official traffic reports.

When you enter your Home and Work locations in your profile settings, you can get one-tap directions and a heads-up warning, such as when to expect an unusual amount of traffic delay before you even open the app for the commute to work and home. It is also useful for public transport passengers who can get real-time bus, train and subway schedules for cities that support this service and learn when and how to change modes without having to wait too long.

Keeping Google Maps Sharp and Current

As with any application that uses real-time data, Google Maps performs best when it is updated. Usually updates come with bug fixes and tweaks to the map, plus new functionality such as additional transit routes or enhanced offline capabilities.

To update on iOS:

- Open the App Store and click on your user name in the top, right corner.

- Scroll down to see pending updates.

- Tap ‘Update’ next to Google Maps in the list.

- Alternatively, enable automatic updates in Settings > App Store to keep it current without manual checks.

To update on Android:

- From the Google Play Store, click on your profile picture.

- Click on "Manage apps & device."

- On Google Maps check the Updates available section.

- If it's accessible, tap “Update” – or check for updates right from the app page on the Play Store.

A few additional tips:

1. Make sure that your device has ample storage space, as bigger updates can otherwise take up more room to be installed properly.

2. Get updates via the Wi-Fi network, if possible, instead of mobile data.

3. Restart the app after the huge update to verify new features.

4. When you experience minor glitches in the application upon update, usually you can clear the cache from the app settings and it will be sorted out.

Regular updates to Google Maps prevent you from having to deal with outdated road maps, the lack of recent improvements in the interface, and other potential safety issues, keeping your navigation experience as easy as the road you're on.
