From home or on-the-go, HBO Max comes packed with a universe of powerful storytelling at your fingertips.

How to Search the Contents You Like

There are quite a few ways to discover and find shows (and Movies) at HBO Max. The app takes you to its Home screen which shows popular titles alongside your "Continue Watching" list as well as recommendations for what might interest (or frustrate) you specifically (For You), and where can also save titles you'd like watch later in My List.

Browsing Options

If you're not sure what to watch, use the Browse menu.

For TV devices: Scroll left and select the Browse icon; for phones, tablets or computers: Select Menu. Here, you can scroll through categories like Original series, Just Added or via genre (e.g. Action, Comedy, Reality). Then you are helpfully showcased with slider and horizontal menu filters than will assist to refine the result more like "featured" or "just added". So if you choose Comedy, then Series will display all the comedy series.

HBO Max also includes Brand Hubs that allow you to sort content by specific brands, such as HBO, DC or Warner Bros. You can click around the Top 10 Series and Top 10 Movies rows if you want to find out what is freshly hot in the waters.

Searching for Specific Titles

If you know what you want to watch, Search. Select the Search icon and enter a series name, movie title, episode title, actor/actress/director or even genre / brand (e.g.: "HBO" or "DC"). Only show results of contents that the currently active profile is allowed to see.

A bit quirkier, you might notice that some series (cartoons and sitcoms) have a Shuffle button on the description page of the series which plays back random episodes.

How HBO Max Personalizes Your Streaming Experience

HBO Max is built to be highly adaptable, giving each user a super customizable personalized viewing experience. It uses a combination of human curation infused with data to suggest top item recommendations based on specific individual preferences.

Profile Customization

You can set up to five unique profiles per account, all with tailored recommendations based on your viewing. There will be profiles with favorite characters as avatars from HBO, Adult Swim and Warner Bros. franchises. For families, there are kid-friendly profiles that feature customizable parental controls with the ability to set ratings, and then a PIN is needed to switch from juvenile content settings on adult profiles.

Content Discovery & Recommendations

The Home page contains a section called Recommended For You, based on your viewing history of shows and movies. A new feedback mechanism allows you to rank content as "Love," "Like," or "Not For Me" — picking Love will even create a dedicated line for your favorite titles, while Not For Me can bubble up similar recommendations less frequently. A Bell icon available on mobile gives you personalized recommendations that are just for you.

Innovative Discovery Tools

If you prefer a more interactive experience, the HBO Max Recommends Alexa skill allows users to verbally browse titles and then "swipe" yes or no on those recommended with voice commands as well; it even has multiplayer mode (accommodating teams of up to three people) using smart speakers in order for viewers at home learn what everyone agrees they want. It is also experimenting with conversational search via AI, making it so that users can enter natural language questions such as "comedies involving family disagreements", and titles matching their queries will show up.

Varying preferences for playback are catered to, with downloadable content available in-app for viewing offline too — HBO Max is meeting every user where they're at relative their streaming journey.

My Stuff: Your Personal HBO Max Section

One of the key aspects is My Stuff, which merges two important viewing tools on HBO Max: My List and Continue Watching. It is your library in the app, it allows you to manage what content that you're going to see and where did you stop watching.

My List is a personal collection you create when you add shows and movies that will watch at another time. You add titles by hitting the "+" icon on any detail page for a series or movie. Each profile gets its own My List, and shows titles until you remove them or they leave the service.

Continue Watching automatically monitors shows and movies you haven't finished—this includes the next episode of a series you're currently watching, too. So you can pick up right where you left off. This list removes titles automatically 90 days after they fall dormant.

You can access My Stuff by either clicking the My Stuff icon in your home page or scrolling down to a row on the right called My List, Tapping your profile icon on phones and tablets also takes you to My Stuff. This feature is available on all subscription plans for HBO Max.

My Stuff aims to streamline your viewing experience so you can quickly save, organize and get back into the flow of content without endless scrolling.
